Why You Should Stop Worrying and Love the Tweet

I bet you never thought I'd post a country song to this blog, right? I mean, many readers have never met me and have no idea what musical tastes I might have, but it's usually a safe bet that most rational people from towns of a population over 5,000 don't listen to southern twang. I don't usually, rest assured, but to those who enjoy it please feel free to play the following clip while you read on.

Kinda fun, right? When I first got the idea for this post I had heard the title of the song but not the song itself. My intention was to tear up the concepts at play a little bit, and it still is, but upon hearing it I realized just how playful the tone is. Social commentary is always so much easier to take when it's done with humour.

So, uh... I just flew in and boy are my arms... never mind.

On Starlight and Streetlights and Saving Mankind

Last night my bride and I woke at 2am, hopped in my topless Jeep, and took a chilly drive out to the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve. It was the darkest place we knew of from which to observe the Perseids meteor shower, an event that lit up the night sky with all sorts of pyrotechnics. My wife, typically uninterested in astronomical pursuits, was on this occasion gung-ho to tag along. Upon arriving we stumbled our way amongst the stargazers by the light of our cellular phones (our flashlight would have ruined everyone's nightvision), spread out in the pitch-black field and let the heavens entertain us.

Debunking Positive Thinking - With Cartoons!

How the Universe Heard My Thoughts and Created Customized Content (video below)

The other day I was part of a conversation in which one party told another, in reference to a potentially troubling development arising in their lives, "Don't worry about it. Remember the power of positive thinking." Without naming anyone or getting into specifics, I'll just say that the future happiness of this person was to be determined by a decision being made by a government agency, and he had done everything within his power already at that point. It all hinged on somebody else's decision, somebody he didn't know and couldn't contact. Positive thinking? I immediately recoiled in my mind - it was unclear to me how cheery thoughts were expected to make one lick of difference either way.
