Betty: A Nude, Coyote-Skulled, Satanic Statue

How to make a creepy looking statue for your haunted house.

Hi folks! Apologies ahead of time to the science-leaning fans of the blog, because I know it's been awhile since I've put out that sort of content, but I have another Halloween prop tutorial to share! Huzzah!

Homemade Demon-Head

Bnner
I made a demon appear out of thin air. My kids named him. Here's how you can do the same.

Ever since I discovered the amazing work being done at the Hellizondo Haunt in California, I've had this itch to start making more home-made props. So I did some reading, watched a few online tutorials, and started to work on my very own glow-in-the-dark demon head.

Wait, let me backtrack. To those unaware, Halloween is a pretty big deal around my house. Yes, Halloween 2011 has already passed and yes, it's getting close to Christmas; but none of that is capable of knocking the ghosts and goblins out of this noggin. Even though I'm proud of the haunts I've put together over the years, the hand-made quality of the haunts at Hellizondo left me feeling just a little bit inadequate, and placed a rather sizeable creative burr inside my bonnet.

Kinetic Sculpture at the Ontario Science Centre

Rube

Rolling Ball Exhibit (Video)
by George Rhoads

A trip to the Science Centre reveals lots of fun science, a little bad science, and a giant machine filled with rolling balls. So I made a video!

Yesterday was another hot one in southern Ontario, and I had children to entertain. The wife had lady guests coming over to the house and preferred a sans-rugrat atmosphere for the occasion, so I was politely asked if I could handle the tots myself for the day; and elsewhere.

I considered the Zoo for a bit, but soon the heat had me contemplating air-conditioned possibilities. Just then it hit me. The Science Centre, of course!* Even though I'm obviously a big fan of science, I hadn't been there since my eldest was just a year old, and I'm not sure why. Maybe at the time I'd been disappointed that my still-drooling infant wasn't sufficiently impressed by the dispersal of light through a prism, but whatever the reason, I hadn't been back in a few years.

Sculpture That Moves

Please excuse the music in this piece, but the visuals are well worth it.

Here's another artform that I didn't know existed: Kinetic Sculpture.  This piece lives at the BMW Museum in Munich.  It uses 714 metal balls attached to independent servos, creating a whole range of both abstract and very recognizable shapes.  Stunningly creative.

I Spit on Your Secret

Please excuse the soft music, cheesy writing, and general lame-itude of this video.  I mean, "It's all about life"?  Jesus.

But I think I just have to know where this damn thing is!  Who's this guy think he is, not telling us?  After watching 'The Goonies' like 800 times as a kid, I'm pretty sure I can't resist a challenge like that.  Sure, I bet if it was public knowledge some bone-head would come knock it down, but I still need to know.

Plus, when you walk for an hour every day, you're looking for variety, and I haven't done 'The Spit' in years.  It's a great walk, and Torontonians who've never done it should feel ashamed of themselves.

And... I just got to find this damn thing...
