More Great Sci-fi Concept Art

Video-Game Concept Art
by Andrea Bianco

I have to admit that I stole the idea to feature Andrea Bianco from the official Posterous blog, but since I've been featuring so many awesome science-fiction artists over the past little while, I thought it appropriate to do some thieving.

To read some of his thoughts on this work, please read that piece here. However I was so enamoured with Andrea's art that I wanted to show more of it than they did, and if you look below, that's just what I've done. Most of this work is concept art for video game design, which seems to be the great new avenue for sci-fi sensibilities in modern culture.

Excellent Sci-Fantasy Illustrations

Banner
Fantasy Scenes
by Yap Kun Rong
Here's a look at another great sci-fi illustrator and painter, Yap Kun Rong. I really love the style, and how he isn't afraid of using lots of colour in his work. Not everything in science fiction has to look like Bladerunner, and Kunrong obviously doesn't mind bringing a little bit of an optimistic, cartoony palette to bear on the genre. (although there's some darker stuff mixed in as well)

Death and Jules Verne

Some more work today by graphic designer/artist Justin Mezzell, who I've profiled before. I find the following work mesmerizing, but unfortunately don't have a lot of time to describe it. Therefore I'll let Justin take it away himself.

Enjoy!

Two very short bits of science-fiction

Genesis and Soul Bot
by Andreas Wannerstedt

We're not here to have a serious discussion about science today folks. Nor are we here to discuss the plausibility of the events that take place in either of the following ultra-short films. According to the artist, Andreas Wannerstedt, they live squarely in the realm of science fiction, and should be treated as such.

Concept Art with a Sci-Fi Twist

01

Today's featured artist is tremendously gifted, and obviously prolific. Simon Weaner is a concept artist and matte painter from Quebec City, and his portfolio contains a large body of simply beautiful work. Only a couple of years out of school, Simon's collection of digital paintings, along with his level of talent, simply floors me.

Strangeness in Space

Astronomersdream
The Astronomer's Dream
by Malcolm Sutherland

One thing I'm always reluctant to share with you folks is anything too long, or too strange.

I find people have wildly varying degrees of patience for abstract and weird artistic explorations; and as we all know, the internet only serves to drive our collective attention span for everything even lower.* While my personal threshold for artsy fartsy peculiarity is on the high side, I understand that for many this is not the case.

Love and Peril - In Space!

Danger2
Danger Planet
by Justin Burks

Ah, the student animation project. What an endless source of wonder and creativity. Ladies and gentlemen, I present you with Danger Planet, a sweet but fun short film that can't help but recall the sensibilities of WALL-E. (My favourite Pixar turn to date, in case you're wondering)

Illustrations and Paintings

Have a look at the very imaginative work of Switzerland's David Fuhrer. I'm sure you'll agree, he's a very talented dude.

Not much more that needs to be said, methinks. Click on images to see larger.

Why Bother Making Science-Fiction Art?

03

Collection: A Separate Reality
by Alex Andreyev

Often when I start a new project, whether it be a painting or piece of animation, I ask myself the question; should I avoid doing something science-fictiony this time?

Usually the answer is no, but I can imagine that you might wonder why I'd consider avoiding the genre in the first place. Well, first and foremost there's the whole "being called a nerd" thing that none of us like.  And then there's this idea out there that fantasy-based art isn't to be taken seriously. It seems that to many, otherworldly art belongs on the covers of nerdy pulp novels and role playing books, and nowhere near a gallery.

Are There Aliens in This Footage?

Site

S.I.T.E
by Pablo Orlowsky

Do you know what we're looking at in this video? Aliens? Monsters? A government experiment gone wrong? The short film entitled 'S.I.T.E.' takes an awesome approach to keeping things mystifying by never really letting the audience all the way in on it's secrets, and damn if the result isn't gripping.
