More Great Sci-fi Concept Art

Video-Game Concept Art
by Andrea Bianco

I have to admit that I stole the idea to feature Andrea Bianco from the official Posterous blog, but since I've been featuring so many awesome science-fiction artists over the past little while, I thought it appropriate to do some thieving.

To read some of his thoughts on this work, please read that piece here. However I was so enamoured with Andrea's art that I wanted to show more of it than they did, and if you look below, that's just what I've done. Most of this work is concept art for video game design, which seems to be the great new avenue for sci-fi sensibilities in modern culture.

Concept Art with a Sci-Fi Twist

01

Today's featured artist is tremendously gifted, and obviously prolific. Simon Weaner is a concept artist and matte painter from Quebec City, and his portfolio contains a large body of simply beautiful work. Only a couple of years out of school, Simon's collection of digital paintings, along with his level of talent, simply floors me.

Amy Shackleton - Newtonian Artist

Banner
I'm fairly sure Amy Shackleton doesn't use the term 'Newtonian artist' herself, but once you see the video below, you'll know why I did. It's a timelapse that documents Amy's entire, brush-free, gravity driven process; one that transforms a blank canvas into a stunning piece of art.

Illustrations and Paintings

Have a look at the very imaginative work of Switzerland's David Fuhrer. I'm sure you'll agree, he's a very talented dude.

Not much more that needs to be said, methinks. Click on images to see larger.

Why Bother Making Science-Fiction Art?

03

Collection: A Separate Reality
by Alex Andreyev

Often when I start a new project, whether it be a painting or piece of animation, I ask myself the question; should I avoid doing something science-fictiony this time?

Usually the answer is no, but I can imagine that you might wonder why I'd consider avoiding the genre in the first place. Well, first and foremost there's the whole "being called a nerd" thing that none of us like.  And then there's this idea out there that fantasy-based art isn't to be taken seriously. It seems that to many, otherworldly art belongs on the covers of nerdy pulp novels and role playing books, and nowhere near a gallery.

2009-2011 Paintings
by Sebastien Feraut

So there's this pattern I've detected in my posts, where I show you the work of some truly talented people, lament on how much less talented I am in comparison, and then ask you to enjoy their work. A little rote I suppose, and I hate being predictable, but sometimes it's hard to resist.

I mean, just look at the work of Sebastien Feraut, and try not to be humbled by it. The composition, detail, and colours; all combine to produce fantastically weird and optimistic collages that are just screaming to be hung on your wall. (Which can happen, just go here)

Trading Mediums

Adam
Bleed Blue
by Adam Smith

In the following collection of paintings by Adam Smith, I'm left wondering why I ever bothered listening to art teachers.

That's because as a young man I was taught that the only artform I was any good at, that being pencil-and-paper comic book style illustration, had no place on a canvas. I remember learning about painting in art class, and being shown how to reproduce bowls of fruit and tranquil landscapes, and becoming convinced that the sort of stuff I liked to imagine wasn't good enough for the grand old lady of the visual arts. Without such discouragement who knows what I could have gone on to do? Painters have always been more famous and respected than us lowly sketch-goons, so perhaps I was denied untold fortunes? Maybe I could have been the next Rembrandt or DaVinci... or Adam Smith for that matter!

On Being Committed

Khoda
Khoda (Video)
by Reza Dolatabadi

Good lord. Forget whether or not you're entertained by the following film, but check the technique with which it was done.

Every frame you see here is a painting. No, I don't mean to say that each frame is as beautiful as a painting, but rather that the creators hand painted 6000 individual canvases over the course of a couple of years, and strung them together into an animated short.

Seriously.

Scary Good

Twisted Images from Anton Semenov

Warning, the work in this post will frighten you.

I came across a post on Abduzeedo today that scared the bejesus out of me.  In it they profiled Anton Semenov from Russia, and while their post included a bunch of his work, I needed to see more.  Even though Anton's paintings are disturbing enough to make you wonder what's mentally wrong with the artist, they're so mind-numbingly well done that you can't look away.

A hand drawn image (done in Illustrator and Photoshop) done at a huge scale. I started this months ago and forgot to finish until just now. The final image is massive. The blown up images at bottom are there for reference and are actually scaled DOWN to 35%.
