Standing on Shoulders

A Silly Video that Made Me Proud to be Human

People
Even if you've never found my scribblings to be tolerable, please at least have a look at the video below.  If it inspires you like it did me, maybe we'll meet again in the next paragraph.

The other night I had dinner with my very first childhood babysitter, also a fellow blogger, and the conversation turned to our sites.  I'll paraphrase a bit.  She told me that she thought I was attempting to challenge conventions with these articles — that by questioning common assumptions I was making an effort to critique society.  I took it as a compliment, which is how I'm sure she meant it, although it did pique my interest somewhat.

Death is Awesome

By Not Living Long, We Prosper

Spock
Allow me to tell you a story, one in which you never die.  Sounds fun, right?

There you are, happily getting your forever on. Yes, you're forced to witness all your friends die, but you have all kinds of time available in which to make new friends.  You never get sick, never feel pain, and get senior's discounts for the duration of the planet's existence.

But what happens when the planet no longer exists, at least in any habitable way?  What do you have planned for a few billion years from now when the earth is burned to a cinder?

Say you escape our barbecued planet on a spacecraft of some sort.  Well, if we're talking about an infinite amount of time here, then that spacecraft will eventually, MUST eventually, collide with an asteroid. What is there to look forward to after that?  Well, you'd then experience an eternity of drifting through the cosmos with nothing but a spacesuit surrounding you - lonely, cold, and incapable of ending it all.

Alone
Yeah, I think I'll take death.

Relax, the following post is by no means an endorsement for social Darwinism or any other tenet of Nazi Germany.  In fact, I'm not talking about people at all.  By the end of this article I hope to convince you of nothing more than the following earth-shattering, albeit subjective, nugget of wisdom; that whales are better than mosquitos.

In listening to a favourite podcast today I heard a story about a controversy brewing in the northern atlantic, where indigenous peoples are coming under fire for their inhumane methods of dispatching Minke whales.  Exposed in the light of the issue is Greenland's recent application for an increase in their annual whale quota to the international body governing such questions.
