Drawing with dots

Dots
Hero
by Miguel Endara

210 hours. 3.2 million hand drawn dots. 1 pen. Infinite patience.

This video went massively viral Monday, and for good reason. In it, Miguel Endara does that thing that many talented artists feel compelled to do; he changes the very way in which his art is made.

Epicycles - The Drawing

'Epicycles' is a charcoal drawing I did a few weeks ago but just got around to posting now.  The title of the piece comes from the theory of planetary motions proposed by Ptolemy of Alexandria, a theory that incorrectly informed our understanding of the heavens for almost two thousand years.  It was only after this idea was disproved by Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton, that our modern technological civilization could be born.  Epicycles was a lovely, elegant theory — a theory that 'felt' right and appeared to almost accurately describe the orbits of the worlds.  People did not take kindly to those who questioned it's veracity.

Unfortunately for them, it was wrong.

Role Playing Days

X-men-01

These are scans from a recently rediscovered treasure trove.

Back in my highschool days, when I was too old to play with toys and too bashful to play with girls, this is how my time was spent.  The mark of youth and dorkery is all over them.

My brother and I reviewed these the other night over dozens of beers and millions of fond memories. The depths to which we all took this collective fantasy making was profound.

As one of two artists amongst the players, it was my job to draw everyone's 'guy', so they could come to life in the shared consciousness.  Most of them were sketched in pencil, then inked, then wrist-damagingly coloured-in using pencil crayon, of all things.

Sure, maybe indulging in this sort of nerd-fare slowed my growth as a social being to some extent, but the creativity poured into shaping this silly game somehow shaped me back.

I really believe that whatever small creative ability I may have was nurtured during this, more than any other, period; by playing these games, imagining these tales, drawing these characters, and the collective building of this shared story.

Here's a sampling.

A hand drawn image (done in Illustrator and Photoshop) done at a huge scale. I started this months ago and forgot to finish until just now. The final image is massive. The blown up images at bottom are there for reference and are actually scaled DOWN to 35%.
