Death and Jules Verne

Some more work today by graphic designer/artist Justin Mezzell, who I've profiled before. I find the following work mesmerizing, but unfortunately don't have a lot of time to describe it. Therefore I'll let Justin take it away himself.

Enjoy!

A lovely short for a lazy Sunday

Waveform1
Tactile Waveforms
by Süperfad

What to post on a lazy Sunday morning? Sure, there are some ideas making banging noises upstairs in the old noggin, but none of them are finished baking yet. I also have a few recently completed projects that I could talk about, (and one really awesome one still in production) but, dangit, I just don't feel like it.

Ash Thorp: Designer and Illustrator

Www

Have a gander at the work of Ash Thorp, and then check out the mini-documentary below. QUITE a talented dude. Many of the attached designs are from his work at Prologue Films, but I decided to remove most of the images that made obvious which movies they were made for.

Spaceflight for Average Joes

Space
Virgin Galactic & Attain Your Astronaut Wings
two projects by Richard Nabarro

We've all heard it's coming. One day, in the not-so-distant future, we'll be packing our bags for low earth orbit. Commercial carriers will offer short space flights to every man, woman, and child; each of which will have the opportunity to match the efforts of Yuri Gagarin. Sure, it'll cost a pretty penny, but imagine what a stunning advance in human progress it will be when average folks can say that they've touched the stars.

I of course, am skeptical.

The Skeptical Designs of Jason Permenter

Hadron500
Former scientist, current designer. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Jason Permenter.

You're going to have to read the fine print, but trust me, the designer we're looking at today is an amusing dude. A skeptically amusing dude, that is. Jason Permenter appears to be one of those people who isn't afraid to laugh at kooky beliefs, and the personal projects on display in his portfolio make that abundantly clear. Just look at some of the copy visible in the images below. Since what you're looking at are mostly photographs of printed material, and not designed specifically for web viewing, some of the type may appear small. But look closely and the rational humour will jump out at you.

My Brand Spanking New Showreel!!!

Logo
Showreel - 2011
by Brad Goodspeed

That's right, I actually used three exclamation points in this post's title. Why? Well, because finally, I'm done!

Motion graphics artists need demo reels, and last year I neglected to make one. It wasn't laziness mind you, just a busy schedule. These things take awhile to put together, and it's hard to take time away from paying customers to promote yourself.

Be Smart! Identify This Quote! (Poster)

02

Poster-Quote #2

Are you up to it?  Do you know—or do you have the ability to find out—who originally spoke or wrote this line? Despite thorough Google searches (at least as thorough as can be expected of a person with as low an attention span as I) I'm without an answer.

Retro Cosmic
by James White

I've been wanting to feature the work of James White for awhile, but since my friends over at The Sponge (an excellent online portfolio dedicated to promoting visual designers in Atlantic Canada) had gotten to him first, I decided to give it some time.

Now however, the statute of limitations on blog-rip-offery has expired, and I'm stealing James' work for my site! Huzzah! Take that Spongeys!

Typographic Experiments: 'What's in a Name?'
By: Bobby Haiqalsyah

In design there seems to be nothing hipper than the subtle yet impactful craft of typography. By arranging letters and words in an artful fashion, a wonderful yet understated look is achieved.  Often the effect is much more subtle than what you see here, consisting simply of stylish font on a clean background, yet anyone familiar with the medium can tell you that it takes creative moxy to get it just right. My favourite quote on the subject reads as follows:

"A great typeface is not a collection of beautiful letters, but a beautiful collection of letters."

The State of Wikipedia
by JESS3 (creative agency)

I post the following video for two reasons.
  1. It's gorgeous.  What a vibrant look for the whole 'infographics' genre.  Clean, concise, fresh and fun.
  2. It tells the story of my very favourite thing on the internet.  I use Wikipedia hourly, and this year decided to 'put my money where my mouse clicks', so to speak.  That's right, I donated money to Wikipedia; not just because I feel like I owe the site for how often I use it, but also because I believe Wikipedia is force for good in our culture.  Information is king in the information age, and Wikipedia is absolutely the place to go for it.
