Extinction and Sprett
two projects by Jonathan Ball

Some of you may remember me posting about Jonathan Ball before, and here's fair warning for the future; I'll probably post about him again.

Animation, Outside the Box

Cubism
Cubism
by Nina Wellstein, Sascha Langer, Felix Schwarz, Mark Haberpursch, & Sergej Feininger

Again I flirt with the possibility of looking like a late-comer. The following short film has been viewed over 65,000 times already, but here's hoping that you, dear reader, are one of the 6.93 billion* people on the planet yet to be so lucky.

Dimensions of Talent

2D and 3D Illustrations
by Jonathan Ball

I just love this stuff. Jonathan Ball alternately uses 3D software and 2D vector tools to create his work, but no matter how they're made, you can tell that each piece comes from the same mind. Optimistic, colourful, imaginative and just a little bit twisted, every bit of Jonathan's work is a pleasure to drink in.

Hocking Knick-Nacks, Making Magic

Ecko Artifaks (Animation)

Ah, the beauty of rampant consumerism. Oh sure, it's produced a wasteful and vain populace. And yeah, it's as unsustainable a model for society as all hell. But you know what? It gives some of us an excuse to make pretty pictures, so onward with the whoring of wares!

Thanks to our desperate need to acquire vast collections of tchotchkes, we have an advertising industry. Because of advertising, all sorts of creatively minded people have jobs. Sure, without it there'd still be some opportunities for self expression in the traditional fine arts. And yes, the creativity that happens in the advertising world is far more likely to be constrained by forces beyond the artist's preferences. After all, those of us in the trinket pushing biz can't do whatever we want by any stretch of the imagination; but hey, at least we don't have to go get real jobs.  Nothing offers more creative opportunities to more people than the grand, elegant old lady of consumer driven society: advertising.

A Dark, Crystalline Core

Core
Core
by Selfburning

Wow.  Trippy.

What happens to our poor crystalline hero in this story?  I have no idea.  In fact, I'm not sure what's going on in this short, period.  It's meant as experimental film after all, so I'm not sure that we're meant to.

Cool Product, Super Cool Animation

Googleebooks

I like the product being sold here, but that's not why I'm posting it.  To launch Google's new e-books service — which I won't link to lest I be accused of shilling for the man — the following video was produced.  It was done by Buck, a production company I've posted about before on this blog.  In that entry I mention how much I enjoyed their showreel, but with the creation of this piece I'm going to have to call myself an outright fan.

I can't tell if there's stop motion mixed in with the graphics or if the piece is completely CGI made to look like stop motion.  Yet however it's done, it's done flawlessly.  I've worked for production companies who count Google as a client, (although I haven't worked on a Google campaign myself) and I know how important good storytelling is to them.  The animations they commission aim less for beauty and more for clarity — after all, they are selling somewhat technical services that require some explaining.

I'd say Buck got it right on both scores here.  See for yourself.

Wickedly Weird - Wowingly Wicked

Mtv

Ok, this spot is freaky-good, while also just being plain old freaky.  In the words of the creators over at I Love Dust:

"The concept of this spot came to us in a dream and we're still not sure what it all means."

Neither do I, except to say that this is a really fresh piece of animation that hits all the right notes.  It's fun, strange, a little sinister, and a lot funky. Love it!

We worked closely with MTV's World Design Studio to create this spot which was based on the theme of sight as part of their first creative collaboration with 55DSL.  The spot will air across MTV's 63 channels worldwide.

Express Tickets

This is a piece I recently completed for Hatch Animation in Nova Scotia, with Mike Hachey and Julian Marentette as producers.

I designed the concept based on a script provided by Hatch.

Storyboard design, illustration, animation done by Goodspeed Productions. 3D text animation by Stephen Blacker at Hatch.

I'm very happy with the way this spot turned out, as the client was initially hesitant based on the dark visual style.

Thankfully, with a little creative nudging from myself and the producers, the spot ended up looking almost exactly how I conceived it.

The client wanted high tech, but as I laughed about later when I realized it, whenever I hear 'high-tech' my mind immediately goes to 'retro-high-tech', and that's what I designed. While I'm sure that's not what they originally wanted, this project had absolutely the fewest revisions of anything I've worked on.

The Most Beautiful Animation I've Ever Seen

Beatles_rock_band_pete_candeland

Excuse the hyperbole of the title, but I just finished watching this and I'm still blown away.

I guess if you've played the 'Rock-Band: Beatles' video game you've seen this before, but I hadn't done either.

What an absolutely fantastic piece, combining techniques in a brilliant way, while exhibiting profound talent and vision.

See below for the video.

Embracing the Third Dimension

Just in case my last post sounded like I was coming down on the 3D guys, here's some beautiful work from that side of things.
